Meliflor Tip

When we grow plants in clay or ceramic plant pots, we need to make sure that we have a good drainage system. The drainage is the way in which the water passes through the substrate until it exits at the base of the pot. Poor drainage will result in waterlogging, which will first damage the roots and then the entire plant.

Which is why if you’re planning on using Meliflor ceramic plant pots for growing plants directly and not as a plant pot cover, we recommend you make a hole in the base of the pot and fill the bottom of the pot with a little gravel, clay balls or any similar material that encourages the drainage of water.

Placing a ceramic plate beneath the plant pot will also help with good drainage. The plate will collect the excess water from irrigation, preventing water and nutrients from being wasted, since this water remains available for the plant when it needs it.

Did you know...

In addition to being an entirely eco-friendly material, the properties of ceramics as a container for growing plants are unbeatable.

For starters, the porous structure of ceramics allows for the exchange of air, which encourages the oxygenation of the roots. At the same time, it promotes the evaporation of excess moisture.

What is more, thanks to its relatively greater thickness and pore structure, the temperature of the substrate remains more stable, without fluctuations or temperature spikes dangerous to roots.

Ceramic containers are also much heavier and more stable than those made of other materials, meaning that it is much harder for them to be knocked over outside on a windy day.
